About Us

History

The band was organized as the Coconino Community College Band in the summer of 1992. Dr. Jean Matthew was the college administrator responsible for helping the band organize. Randy Colvard served as the founding director. The first concert was performed in front of the public library on July 4, 1992. After two years as the community college band, the group decided to become independent of the college and it has been ever since. When the band became independent, its name was changed to the Flagstaff Community Band. The band has provided free, public concerts since 1994, and expects to continue the concerts for the foreseeable future.

Governance

The governance of the band is vested in a Board of Directors specified in Constitution. The Board consists of a Chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer, Manager and three Members-at-Large. The officers and one Member-at-Large are elected annually. The Board is assisted in the day-to-day operations of the band by an Executive Director.

Membership

Membership in the band is open to everyone subject to the Conductor's approval. An audition may be required. Membership for persons under 18 will require written parental permission. Members are expected to pay a stand fee of $25.00 for adults and $10.00 for 18 and under. The fee may be waived by the Conductor under special circumstances and should not inhibit participation in the band. Band members should make all reasonable attempts to attend the scheduled rehearsals and performances.

Support

The band derives it's support from six sources: stand fees, ad sales included in concert programs, concert performance fees, grants, and donations from individuals and businesses. Band members are asked to participate in fund raising events, but are not required to do so. Contributions to the band may be made through any band member. Contributions are always needed and greatly appreciated. Contributions go toward band equipment, music and general operating expenses. The band is entirely composed of volunteers; only the Conductor receives a small fee for each performance she conducts. Inquiries about support should be directed to the Band Contact.

Rehearsals

Rehearsals begin in March and last into September, depending on the concert schedule. Specialty groups, e.g., the brass ensemble rehearse the year around. Rehearsals are currently held in the Army National Guard Armory, 320 N. Thorpe, Wednesday, 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Members are encouraged to arrive 20 to 30 minutes early to prepare for rehearsal and meet and talk with other band members. Players are expected to be ready to play at 7:00pm.

Band School

Sometimes persons interested in joining the band are reluctant to apply for membership because they haven't played for some time. To help overcome this reluctance, the Conductor has offered brush up sessions prior to rehearsals. The sessions focus on skills needed to contribute to the band's music in a elemental manner and permit the "student" to enter the band quickly. Once in the band, rehearsals, practice and coaching by a Section Leader are adequate to bring skills to a desirable level. Questions about the Brush Up Band School should be directed to the Conductor.
